overview

Hernie Cleugh (meaning heron ravine) is a cosy farm cottage at Hillhouse Farm Escapes. The property has an open plan living-kitchen-dining space for up to 4 guests. You’ll sleep well in its two pretty bedrooms with views to the hills and towards the farm’s steading. This stone-built cottage is semi-detached. This is an ideal rural location, with a restaurant 1 mile’s walk and short drives to Lauder, Melrose, Kelso, St Boswells and also to Edinburgh.

Guests will find Hernie Cleugh to be extremely comfortable. It is well-equipped for a family or a small group. Hernie Cleugh can also be connected to Highfield next door, extending the property to 4 bedrooms and 3 bath/shower rooms. The oak kitchen table next door is big enough to seat everyone!

Walks from your door will be possible – Hillhouse Farm has superb tracks across its hills and valleys. Note that we are dog-friendly (one included free of charge, more on request) and also horse-friendly (please ask). If you are a keen tennis player, you can make full use of our tennis court (shared with 3 other cottages and the Sutherland family). It has tremendous views across Lauderdale.

the space

Hernie Cleugh is a semi-detached farm cottage with living-kitchen-dining space and shower room downstairs, and two bedrooms upstairs. It dates back to the 1800s and is built from beautiful local stone. The cottage is really cosy (heating by renewable biomass) and has WiFi throughout.

kitchen & living room

The open-plan kitchen and living space is accessed from the entrance hall. There is a very well-equipped kitchen with everything you’d expect including crockery, cutlery, glassware, pans, oven trays and utensils. There is also an oven with an induction hob, dishwasher, under-counter fridge and microwave. The living area has a large comfy sofa, an armchair and a smart TV. The dining table easily seats 4 guests.

bedrooms & bathrooms

Upstairs, there are two country-style bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king bed, and the second bedroom is set up with twin beds. We provide all towels and linen. We can also set up a travel cot and/or a camp bed if needed – please just ask.

outside spaces

The holiday cottage has a parking space, gravelled area with table and chairs and a garden for your use. Please note, if you are bringing small children or pets, that the garden area is not contained. You’ll also be able to play on the Hillhouse tennis court (shared), and make use of all of the farm walks and cycle routes.

If you don’t fancy cooking during your stay, there is a perfect option about a mile from the farm in Carfraemill hotel. We also recommend The Black Bull which are both in Lauder, just 10 mins away. There are lots of coffee shop options nearby too, including Soutra (which Jo Sutherland also runs), the Flat Cat Gallery and Spotty Dog (both Lauder) and Main Street Trading in St Boswells. Further local information available before and during your stay.

Hillhouse Farm Escapes is the perfect place to stay in a farm cottage if you’re looking for a holiday with an abundance of landscapes and fresh air. Right from the door, you can walk and mountain bike across our upland farm, Hillhouse, which has lots of excellent tracks. You’ll find ponds for wild swimming if that’s your thing. The Lammermuir Hills, beyond our farm, offer great options for walking too. There is a professional-grade tennis court here at Hillhouse, available for your use and shared by the three farm cottages and the farmhouse.

We can provide a travel cot and high chair if needed, as well as extra camp beds. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. There are safe walks to see our sheep, and children particularly love lambing time (late April and early May). Children will also enjoy paddling in small streams, playing pooh sticks, splashing and skimming stones.

We are very happy to accept one well-behaved dog at this farm cottage. Please just let us know. One dog is free of charge and we sometimes permit a second dog (with a small fee per stay). We ask that you always clean muddy paws and coats before coming into the cottage, and that dogs are not allowed upstairs or on any furniture. The walking routes described above are ideal for your dog, though please be aware that dogs must be on a lead in sheep fields. Please also note that, during lambing (April/May), we ask that you avoid the sheep fields where possible. You’ll find there are plenty of fields without any livestock as well.

Self-catering horse holidays are possible at Hillhouse Farm Escapes. The 1500-acre upland sheep farm gives you direct access to outstanding riding routes including farm tracks and open fields, with incredible views for miles around. Those looking for ride-outs beyond the farm can easily access the Lammermuir Hills with breathtaking landscapes across heather-covered moorland routes. Horses and ponies are able to stay in paddocks – it is essential that you discuss this with us at the time of booking. We charge a fee per horse for stays.

our guestbook

We had a lovely break at House on the Hill. I stayed there with my wife and two boys (7 and 12). It was very reassuring at this time that the cottage was immaculately clean and that so many steps were taken to ensure our safety. The House on the Hill was much more spacious than we expected...the perfect cottage for our needs for our short break. Also, Jo replied very promptly with detailed instructions for our stay. We would definitely return and couldn’t recommend Jo’s cottage highly enough - the only thing that wasn’t great was the weather!

Grant - House on the Hill - October 2020

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It is very spacious and cosy at the same time, and very clean. It was the ideal base to explore the Borders, and the coast isn't far away. Ideal spot for families.

David - Berry Hill - October 2020

Lovely cosy annexe. Comfortable and very well equipped. Wonderfully warm on cold days. Excellent information folder. Great location with good walks from the property and close to border towns and sights, such as the ruined abbeys. Edinburgh a short drive away. Our dog loved it too!

Andrew - Little House on the Hill - May 2021

This cottage is an immaculate and beautifully presented property. It is well appointed and equipped; everything from kitchen crockery, bed linen, furniture and showers are tasteful and attractive. We had a comfortable and relaxing stay. It is set in a stunning and peaceful location with hill walks and views literally on your doorstep. It is an ideal base to explore the Scottish Borders from. Visitors are encouraged to explore the farm and it's surroundings - which we did - and as town dwellers walking close to sheep and wildlife was a joy. Jo is a wonderful and friendly host and we can't wait to return.

Jerry - Berry Hill - July 2021

Perfect place for a break, we used for a family getaway and will be visiting again in the future. Cannot recommend Jo and the cottages highly enough!

James - Little House on the Hill - August 2021

Really enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage. It was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed for our 3 night stay. Great rural location but close enough to Melrose, Kelso and other border towns for a day trip. Some beautiful scenery in that part of the world. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this cottage for a family break.
