tennis court now open

In what is probably the longest tennis project in history, the new court is now ready for play and can be booked online. We built the prototype version of the Hillhouse court 25 years ago, choosing a site that makes the most of the farm’s stunning views south over the Scottish Borders. Finally, in 2021, we are very excited that the tennis court project has been completed with an outstanding professional surface. We are absolutely thrilled with it and we hope our guests will be too. It’s perfect for aspiring Murrays or Raducanus, or for those who just fancy a knockabout.

booking the tennis court – holiday cottage guests

If you’d like to make use of the tennis court during your stay in one of our cottages, there is no charge for this. You will usually find it’s easy to get a few slots to play during your stay. Please just ask us about booking when you get here, or get in touch before you arrive if you prefer. We can also provide tennis rackets if needed, as well as balls. Those with more tennis prowess may wish to bring their own equipment of course!

Tennis is particularly good fun for those coming as part of a Group Accommodation booking. There have already been lots of impromptu mini-tournaments, singles, doubles and kids games.

private bookings & tennis parties

We are happy to hire out the tennis court to locals as well, whether for a short session or an afternoon. Please just get in touch if you are interested.

For those keen to play with a friend or partner, whether singles or doubles, you can book by the hour for a one-off slot. We are also happy to take regular bookings.

If you’d like to bring a few people to use the court, e.g. for a mini tournament, we accept bookings for tennis parties. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and availability.

history of the court at Hillhouse

Jim started building the court 25 years ago. Being a farmer, and agricultural engineer, he felt he could make a good go of making a playable, DIY tennis court at Hillhouse. The area was landscaped, hardcore put down and the perimeter fence erected. Jim designed everything to Lawn Tennis Association standard so it’s always been a full-size court. He decided that a good value “surface” of whin dust would be just the thing. However, our first tournament proved that whin dust has no bounce, and then the court lay unused for 25 years! In 2021, we decided that our guests might really love the tennis court with its beautiful view. So, along came the professional installers, and we now have a stunning court for visitors to Hillhouse.
