equestrian stays at hillhouse farm
There’s something magical about exploring new landscapes on horseback – the connection with your horse, the rhythm of hoofbeats, and the freedom to discover hidden corners of the countryside that few others ever see. At Hillhouse Farm Escapes, we’ve created the perfect setting for both horse and rider to enjoy an unforgettable Scottish Borders adventure.
your riding paradise in the scottish borders
Nestled across 1450 acres of rolling hills, moorland, and grassland in the heart of the Scottish Borders, Hillhouse Farm offers some of the finest equestrian holiday experiences in Scotland. It’s a regenerative farm, with a focus on nature-friendly practices, including conserving some truly special ancient wildflower meadows. This is historically horse country, where centuries of riding tradition continue today across landscapes that seem designed for the partnership between horse and rider.
Our farm provides countless hacking routes ranging from gentle 30-minute ambles to exhilarating 2+ hour adventures across diverse terrain. Picture cantering across golden stubble fields in late summer, splashing through little streams, or taking in panoramic views from hilltops that stretch to the horizon. The majority of our land is grassland and moorland, offering both hard tracks with grass verges and softer grassy paths perfect for every pace and preference. From late summer / early autumn onwards, we also have plenty of stubble fields for a gallop.

terrain that suits every horse and rider
What makes Hillhouse special for equestrian holidays is the variety of our landscape. Our terrain offers scope for riders of all levels – from those seeking gentle, scenic walks to experienced riders looking for exciting gallops across open country. You’ll find:
- Hard tracks with grass verges for comfortable, sure-footed riding
- Grassy tracks perfect for picking up the pace
- Open fields where you can really let your horse stretch its legs
- Little streams to ford, adding adventure to your rides
- Moorland paths that offer spectacular views across Lauderdale
- Stubble fields in autumn and winter
We ask riders to be mindful of our farm animals – simply stay towards fence lines when livestock are present and avoid lambing fields during April and May. Throughout the seasons, our arable areas change from ploughed fields and crops (to be avoided) to stubble fields that provide fantastic opportunities for some exhilarating speed.
The farm gates are generally easy to open, though you may need to dismount. Don’t worry – that just gives you a moment to pause and appreciate the incredible wildlife around you, from the huge variety of birds to deer, hares, and rabbits that call Hillhouse home.

accommodation designed for horse and rider
We understand that a perfect equestrian holiday means comfort for both you and your horse. That’s why we offer five beautiful self-catering cottages, each providing different options depending on your group size and budget:
Fairnielees (sleeps 7) sits in splendid isolation half a mile from the main farm buildings, surrounded by nothing but hills, fields, and tracks. It’s perfect for those who want to feel like they have the entire farm to themselves. Grazing is available next to the cottage.
At the main farm complex, you’ll find Highfield and Hernie Cleugh (both sleeping 4-5), Berry Hill (sleeps 4), and Bracken Hill (sleeps 6). All cottages include use of our professional tennis court – perfect for when you want to enjoy some two-legged activity after a day in the saddle.
care for your horses and ponies

beyond hillhouse: exploring the scottish borders
While our own riding is exceptional and perfect for shorter breaks, longer stays open up incredible opportunities across the wider Scottish Borders. A short trailer journey takes you to historic routes like:

- Countless other trails detailed in the comprehensive Horse Trails booklet produced by the Southern Uplands Partnership
the living history of border riding
The Scottish Borders isn’t just beautiful – it’s steeped in equestrian history. Every summer, Border towns host collective “ride-outs” called Common Ridings, a tradition dating back to the 13th century when checking boundaries was essential in these contested lands between Scotland and England.
The Lauder Common Riding (early August) welcomes riders from around the world. There’s no registration fee – just turn up and join this centuries-old celebration of horsemanship and community. Across other Scottish Border towns, ride-outs are on set dates from May through to August. Previous equestrian guests have joined Edinburgh’s Riding of the Marches in September – in 2025, they were in good company, riding alongside HRH, the Princess Royal (a former equestrian athlete having competed in the Olympic Games!).
