Dog Friendly
Exploring the Scottish Borders With Your Four-Legged Friend
If your idea of the perfect getaway includes muddy paws, wagging tails, and endless countryside, then the Scottish Borders is the place to be. At Hillhouse, we know that dogs aren’t just pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why we love sharing all the paw-some dog friendly adventures you can have with your canine companion right on our doorstep.
Walks With a View
The Scottish Borders is bursting with beautiful walking routes, and many are dog-friendly (and sheep-free!). Whether you’re after a gentle amble or something more rugged, there’s a trail for everyone.
The Eildon Hills near Melrose offer panoramic views and gentle climbs. Your dog will love exploring the heather-covered paths—and let’s be honest, so will you. For something closer to the coast, St Abb’s Head Nature Reserve is spectacular, with dramatic cliffs, wildflowers, and seabird colonies. Just keep your pup on a lead near the edge (and the sheep!).
And don’t forget the Southern Upland Way, a beautiful route taking in the sights of the Scottish Borders. You don’t have to walk the full 214 miles (unless your dog is seriously sporty), but sections of it are perfect for a day out.
However, we think the best walks are right on your doorstep. Hillhouse has loads of beautiful walks, all you need to do is step outside.

Playtime, Dog Parks & Agility Fun
For some off-lead excitement in a secure space, check out King’s Dog Leisure, just down the road from here. It’s a brilliant spot to let your dog run wild without a worry. With acres of fenced paddocks, agility equipment, and with private hire options, it’s ideal for high-energy pups or a bit of structured fun. There’s, sandpit, tunnels—basically doggy heaven!
If you want to enjoy some safe freedom, King’s Dog Leisure is a fantastic addition to any doggy to do list.

Pubs, Pit Stops and Dog Biscuits
All that walking and tail-wagging is thirsty work—for both humans and hounds. Luckily, the Borders is full of cosy, dog-welcoming pubs and cafes.
The Black Bull is another fantastic dog-friendly stop, perfect for grabbing dinner or a drink after a long walk. And also in Lauder, The Spotty Dog offers a dog-loving welcome, tasty coffee, and some great homemade cakes for the humans.
Lots of local cafes have dog-friendly seating areas, so you won’t miss out on a scone and a cuppa after your countryside stroll.
Wild Swims and River Dips
If your pup loves a splash, you’re in luck. There are plenty of rivers and streams where dogs can dip their paws. The River Tweed has some quieter spots perfect for a paddle, especially near Thirlestane Castle or down towards Melrose. Just bring a towel—wet dog smell is part of the package!
Stay and Snuggle
Of course, after all that excitement, you’ll both need somewhere warm and welcoming to relax. That’s where we come in. At Hillhouse, our dog-friendly escapes mean your pooch can curl up by the fire or snooze in the sun while you enjoy a well-earned rest. We even provide a few creature comforts—like bowls, blankets, and a few tasty treats.
So, whether you’re throwing sticks into rivers, navigating agility courses, or just chilling out with a dog by your side and a view out the window, Hillhouse is the ultimate escape for two- and four-legged explorers alike.
Ready to explore? We can’t wait to welcome you all to Hillhouse.
